I cavi CAT6 consentono una connessione comoda e affidabile tra dispositivi di rete, come switch, modem o router, e l'infrastruttura più ampia tramite un pannello patch, un keystone jack o una presa a muro. Questi cavi sono ampiamente utilizzati anche in applicazioni di rete e intrattenimento per piccoli uffici e abitazioni. Sono testati fino a 250 MHz (standard CAT6) e sono retrocompatibili con i cavi CAT5e e CAT5. Sono dotati di protezione del fermo, che impedisce al connettore di danneggiarsi durante l'installazione in spazi molto ristretti. Inoltre, questo cavo è fabbricato con schermatura, che protegge dalle EMI (interferenze elettromagnetiche).
